 Welding Neck Flanges are easy to recognize at the long tapered hub, that goes gradually over to the wall thickness from a pipe or fitting.

The long tapered hub provides an important reinforcement for use in several applications involving high pressure, sub-zero and / or elevated temperatures. The smooth transition from flange thickness to pipe or fitting wall thickness effected by the taper is extremely beneficial, under conditions of repeated bending, caused by line expansion or other variable forces.

These flanges are bored to match the inside diameter of the mating pipe or fitting so there will be no restriction of product flow. This prevents turbulence at the joint and reduces erosion. They also provide excellent stress distribution through the tapered hub and are easily radiographed for flaw detection.

The Types and Uses of Weld Neck Flanges

Weld neck flanges have long tapered hubs that are butt welded to a pipe or fitting. The conditions they are used in are usually severe. Conditions are sometimes constant or have wide fluctuations.
The Two Types of Weld Neck Flanges
There are two types of weld neck flanges, which are standard and long. Standard weld neck flanges are used in butt weld fittings. Long weld neck flanges are used with vessel nozzles and equipment. The flanges are created to match the pipe’s inside diameter or fitting. The reason why it is bored to match is because it reduces the corrosion and turbulence that takes place inside of the pipe.
Long Neck Welding (abbreviated LWN) flanges are similar to a standard Welding Neck flange, but the "Neck" is considerably longer. This type is often used as a nozzle for a barrel or column. In addition, there are the type LWN Heavy Barrel (HB) and the Equal LWN Barrel (E); they have a different shape and a thicker "Wall".
Long weld neck flanges are called by this name due to their longer neck as compared to standard flanges. These flanges are used in applications as nozzles for columns or barrels.
Applications that Use Weld Neck Flanges
Weld neck flanges are used in applications where the conditions are severe and critical. Some of these conditions include high pressure, wide fluctuations in temperature and pressure, high temperature, fluids that are volatile and hazardous, and temperatures in the sub-zero range.
Meeting ASME Standards
Forged Components offers standard connections in a full range of pressure rating classes and sizes as according to ASME standards of ASME Section VIII Div. 1 and ASME B16.5 in the latest specifications. Connections can also be manufactured to match ASME Section VIII Div. 2 or other specifications desired. ANSI flanges are manufactured according to the material grades and customer’s custom orders.

Weld Neck Pipe Flanges

Weld neck pipe flanges attach to the pipe by welding the pipe to the neck of the pipe flange.  The allows for the transfer of stress from the weld neck pipe flanges to the pipe itself.  This also reduces high stress concentration at the base of the hub of the weld neck pipe flanges.  Weld neck pipe flanges are often used for high pressure applications.  The inside diameter of a weld neck pipe flange is machined to match the inside diameter of the pipe.  Weld Neck Pipe flanges with a hub have published specifications that range from 1/2" thru 96".  Sunny Steel provides Weld Neck pipe flanges in all material grades, specifications and sizes.

Weld neck pipe flanges are typically provided with a raised face, flat face, or RTJ facing.  When a raised face is necessary for weld neck pipe flanges, the standard height is 1/16" for weld neck pipe flanges under 400#.  For weld neck pipe flanges of 400# and up, the standard weld neck pipe flange raised face height is 1/4".
